Dave Johnson
Dave Johnson believes in soccer and believes in Annapolis. That combination has driven one of America’s premier soccer announcers and the Washington D.C. market’s most visible media personalities to commit to the Blues.
Johnson grew up near in Annapolis in Gambrills and went to the same high school as fellow Blues investor Kyle Beckerman, Arundel High School.
Before his time in D.C. began in 1990, Johnson was the Sports Director of WNAV Radio and among the Navy sports, he championed the Midshipmen men’s soccer team of Dr. Greg Myers. Among the play-by-play broadcasts, Johnson sold and produced Navy in NCAA playoffs in 1988 and broadcast state powerhouse Severna Park High School
Johnson is the play-by-play television voice of D.C. United and has been since 1996 making him the only broadcaster with the same team since the beginning of Major League Soccer. In 2006 Johnson was the lead voice from Germany in XM’s coverage of the World Cup. From 2007-2012 Johnson called MLS, USMNT and USWNT matches for Fox.
In the mornings, Johnson is anchoring sports on WTOP 103.5 FM where he has been since 1995 and he serves as the station’s Senior Sports Director. In addition, Johnson is the only radio play-by-play voice the Washington Wizards have ever had. After serving as fill-in announcer on Bullets television and radio, broadcasts for six years Johnson moved into a full time role on radio before the team’s first season as the Wizards in 1997.
Johnson has also worked at NBC 4 and NBC Sports Washington and earned four regional Emmy awards.
In 2019, Johnson was named D.C. Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sports Media Association. Diagnosed with MS in 2019 Johnson is active with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
